If there is more moisture present than the air can hold then condensation takes place. If the air is warmer, then it can hold more amount of moisture, however if the temperature of air drops and reaches the saturation level then water droplets are formed. Therefore, if you are in the metal building then ceiling drips when warm and moist air meets cooler roof or wall and surface moisture is caused.
One of the main causes of condensation is high amount of interior humidity. This can be caused due to either heating or air conditioning system of your room. Also, if improper techniques are used or due to oil/gas fired heaters or due to human respiration, condensation may take place.
Condensation generally takes place when the temperature is below 35 degrees F for a long period.
How to reduce or eliminate condensation?
You need to maintain relative humidity in the room in order to prevent the occurrence of condensation. You can achieve that in the following way.
- Insulate the metal building
You need to insulate your roof and the wall by using good vinyl backed insulated materials in your metal building. This can prevent the contact between humid and warm air with cool and dry architectural metal panels.
- Use better air circulation
By using fans, you must maintain better air circulation within the room so that evaporation will take place.
- Proper ventilation
Provide enough vents on the ceiling so that warm and moist air may escape, particularly if there are more number of people present in the room.
- Review lighting fixtures
Lighting fixtures can also produce varying effects in the moisture levels in the room
- Use dehumidifier
You can also run compressor of your AC to dehumidify the air inside.
- Insulation must be continuous
Insulation should just not be inserted between the framing members rather it should be continuous. Otherwise, the metal area, which remains exposed can create condensation and also unwanted transfer of heat.
- Proper sealing of insulation
You need to ensure that insulation is properly sealed at the ends by rolling the vinyl insulation over the ends. All the seams and joints must be properly lapped and sealed. It must be properly secured so that moisture is prevented to reach the fiberglass.
If the condensation occurs in wrong place and remain present for a long time then it can create corrosion, mold and effective life of your metal building will reduce.
